First painting of the New Year for 2026! This is a snowy morning landscape at the bottom of our garden in north Essex, UK. The sun was rising through the tree line in the distance creating long shadows across the garden from the fence. I took lots of photos (too cold to paint en plein air at that time of the morning) and it was only when I was going through them that I noticed the strikingly long shadows. Sometimes paintings just seem to paint themselves, and this was one of them. I was trying to capture the mood of the morning, the atmosphere and the stillness of winter.
